What is transfer of learning?
The effect that the learning of one skill has on the learning of another.
What is positive transfer?
When previous skill experience helps the learning of a new skill because of similar shapes, form and environment.
What is negative transfer?
When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another because the familiarity of the environment causes confusion even when the actions aren’t the same. E.g. a forehand in tennis and in squash.
What is zero transfer?
When previous experience has no effect on learning a new skill as there is no similarity in movement or environment. E.g. swimming and cycling, netball shot and diving.
What is bilateral transfer?
When the learning of one skill is passed across the body from limb to limb.

Highlight similarities and differences between skills
Coach must use positive reinforcement when the skill is performed correctly and negative reinforcement when it is performed incorrectly.
The first skill must be in the autonomous stage of learning.
