What are 5 key properties of water?

  • It is a metabolite - meaning used in many reactions (such as condensation and hydrolysis)

  • It is a solvent - meaning solutes can be dissolved in it (important because metabolic reactions happen in solution)

  • Has a high heat capacity - meaning it takes a lot of energy to raise temperature of water therefore buffers temperature changes

  • Has a large latent heat of vaporisation - meaning it takes a lot of energy to turn liquid water to a gas (provides a cooling effect)

  • Has strong cohesion between water molecules - supports water columns (for example in a plant xylem)
