Hematocrit
The percent of blood volume that is made up of erythrocytes (RBCs), approximately 45%.
Erythrocytes
Also known as red blood cells (RBCs), they are responsible for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
Leukocytes
White blood cells (WBCs) that are part of the immune system and help fight infections.
Thrombocytes
Platelets that play a key role in blood clotting.
Plasma
The liquid component of blood, consisting of water, dissolved solutes, and proteins.
Albumin
The most abundant plasma protein (~60%), responsible for maintaining osmotic pressure.
Fibrinogen
A plasma protein that is a key factor in blood clotting.
Oxyhemoglobin
The form of hemoglobin bound to oxygen; gives blood a ruby red color.
Deoxyhemoglobin
The form of hemoglobin not bound to oxygen; gives blood a dark red color.
Carbaminohemoglobin
The form of hemoglobin that is bound to carbon dioxide, primarily formed in tissues.
Biconcave structure
The shape of erythrocytes, increasing surface area for gas exchange.
