1862- one of the bloodiest battles, showed how deadly war would become. Union gained upper hand after counterattacking the confederate’s surprise attack. U gained control of Mississippi River territory

1862- The bloodiest single day battle in US history. Lee invaded the U, but U fought back, Abe Lincoln issued Emancipation Proclamation

1863- U gained control of Mississippi River which split the confederacy into 2 parts.

1863- Major turning point, U stopped confederate invasion, one of the bloodiest battles

1864- Military campaign, Sherman marched from Atlanta to Savannah. tried to cripple the C’s by destroying everything.

1865- Final major battle, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. Ended the civil war (U victory)
