Analysis, Writing, Literary devices & Genre Information
You should also know about the following literary devices, genre and context information:
Audience- The people a writer is trying to reach
Purpose- The reason the author wrote the text
Context- The background information or circumstances surrounding a text
satire-types
Humor- Using something funny to entertain or make a point
Irony- When what happens in different from what is expected
Exaggeration- Making something seem bigger, better, worse, or more important than it really is
European Romantic Period themes- Emotion, imagination, nature, individualism, freedom, and the supernatural
Tone- The authors attitude toward the subject
Imagery- Descriptive language that appeals to the senses
Symbol- An object, person, or event that represents a deeper meaning
Allusion- A reference to a famous person, event, book, or idea
Synthesis- Combining ideas from multiple sources into one understanding
counter argument- An opposing viewpoint to your argument
Diction- An author’s choice of words
Paraphrase- Restating something in your own words
Metaphor- A comparison without using “like” or “as”
Simile- A comparison using “like” or “as”
Foreshadowing- Hints about what will happen later in a story
female gothic- A literary genre focusing on women facing fear, isolation, oppression, or mystery, often in dark settings
Byronic hero- A flawed, rebellious, intelligent, and mysterious hero who often struggles with guilt or emotional pain
