Sun Yat-sen
Led revolutionary efforts and helped establish the Republic of China.
Yuan Shikai
Became president after the revolution and tried to become emperor.
Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek)
Led the KMT and the Northern Expedition.
Mao Zedong
Communist leader who eventually led the CCP to victory and emerged as a major CCP leader during the Long March.
First Opium War (1839–1842)
Conflict resulting from the opium trade where China was defeated and forced to sign unequal treaties.
Self-Strengthening Movement
Attempted modernization but had limited success.
Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901)
Opposition to foreign influence.
Revolution of 1911
Event that ended the Qing Dynasty and caused it to collapse.
Warlord Era
Period where China became politically divided, leading to a need for unification.

Increased nationalism and support for reform.
Founding of the CCP (1921)
The establishment of the Communist Party.
Northern Expedition (1926–1928)
Attempt to unify China under the KMT that resulted in the defeat of many warlords.
Split between KMT and CCP (1927)
The beginning of a long conflict and the Chinese Civil War.
Long March (1934–1935)
A journey that strengthened Mao's leadership and helped him emerge as a major CCP leader.
