Pathology
The scientific study of diseases.
Pathos
A Greek word meaning suffering or disease.
Logos
A Greek word meaning the study of.
General Pathology
The branch of pathology that looks at how cells or tissues respond to injurious stimuli.
Systemic Pathology
The study of systemic changes that occur during disease.
Etiology
The cause of a disease.
Prognosis
The anticipated outcome of a disease.
Symptoms
The complaints presented by a patient, such as headache or fever.
Signs
The clinical evidence of disease observed by a clinician.
Histopathology
The study of diseased tissues.
Autopsy
An examination of a dead body to determine the cause of death.
Microscopy
The use of microscopes to study cells.
Immunohistochemistry
A technique using antibodies to identify antigens in tissues.
Cytopathology
The study of cells.
Pap Smear
A test to screen for pre-malignant lesions in the cervix.
Idiopathic
A disease for which the cause is unknown.
Hematology
The study of blood and its disorders.
Epidemiology
The study of the frequency and distribution of diseases within a population.
Dysplasia
Disorderly growth or development of tissue.
Hyperplasia
An excessive increase in the number of cells.
Hypoplasia
A deficiency in the number of cells or underdevelopment of an organ.
Neoplasia
The formation of new, abnormal growth of tissue, often referring to tumors.
