Pancreas
Horizontal organ located under and behind your stomach. Is a endocrine gland (insulin, glucagon) as well as an exocrine gland for digestion
Pancreatic Amylase
Secreted by the pancreas and delivered to the duodenum. Breaks down carbs/starches
Lipase
Secreted by the pancreas and delivered to the duodenum, Breaks down fats
Trypsin
Secreted by the pancreas and delivered to the duodenum. Breaks down proteins
Liver
Largest organ inside the body. Lies mainly in the upper right section of the abdominal cavity. It is made up of two lobes separated by a ligament. The root term “hep” stands for liver
Bile
Made by the liver and delivered to the duodenum to emulsify fats
Emulsification
The breaking of large pieces of fat into smaller pieces to make digestion easier
Jaundice
Liver ailment causing a yellowish tint to the eyes and skin. Due to the bilirubin breakdown in our blood.
Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver. Comes in 5 types (A,B,C,D,E)
Type A
Very dangerous and acquired from sewage-contaminated drinking water. Has a vaccine
Type B
Very dangerous and acquired by sexual contact or by blood (transfusion/needles). Has a vaccine
Type C&D
Usually acquired by contact with infected blood. no vaccine
Type E
Acquired by drinking sewage-contaminated water. no vaccine
Cirrhosis
Chronic disease of the liver. The organ becomes fatty and scarred by fibrous tissue and no longer able to do its job. Most common cause is alcoholism
Gallbladder
Pear-shaped organ located under the liver and stores excess bile until needed. Bile salts may congregate in the gallbladder causing gallstones
Essential Fatty Acids
Two fats that our body must ingest to get (our body makes the others we need). These two essential fatty acid are Linoleic Acid and Linolenic Acid
Essential Amino Acids
Our body needs 20 amino acids to form the protein we create. Nine of these twenty are only found in food and therefore are “essential” to our diets
Vitamins
Organic molecules that are vital to life in small quantities and provide building materials for our bones, muscles, and nervous system.
Obesity
68% of more Americans are obese which is a body weight of 20% or more above your ideal weight. Can lead to many poor health conditions
Bulimia Nervosa
Eating disorder where a person will binge eat, but will purge or extreme diet due to a specific body type. Guilty for eating so much that they will purge it afterwards.
Anorexia Nervosa
Eating disorder where a person is afraid of food and gaining weight to the point where they do not eat at all. Even athletes can fall under this. category (wrestling, ballet, gymnastics)

Inorganic molecules that are vital to life in small quantities and provide building materials for our bones, muscles, and nervous system
