What is referencing?
the work piece must be properly positioned with respect to the cutting tool
What 4 things must the tool designer provide?
Accurate positioning of the part
rigid support for the part
facilitate loading and unloading
correct part orientation or fool proofing
When choosing how to locate the workpiece, what is the order?
a hole
2 machined surfaces at right angles to each other
1 machined and 1 unmachined surface at right angles to each other
what tolerance should the tool have in relationship to the part tolerance
20% to 50%
What is fool proofing
place locators to unsure part only fits one way

what is the rule for placing locators?
space locators as far as possible but not to the extreme

why should you use button or pin locators?
to limit contact when machining chips are a problem
What are the three types of supports used for flat surfaces?
solid supports: can be machined into the tool body or base for machined part surfaces
adjustable supports: used for castings and forgings with rough or uneven surfaces
equalizing supports: provides contact on two surfaces at once
What is the only purpose of a clamp?
they only hold the workpiece against the locators - they are not allowed to locate the parts
What are the 3 basic forms of locating?
plane
concentric
radial

what’s the best way to locate a cylindrical workpiece?
V-Block (centralizing feature)
