Data
Facts and figures; computers store data as 1s and 0s (binary numbers).
Model
In computing, a model is software that copies the real world using data and rules. Models are used to understand/analyse how the real world behaves.
Simulator
A type of model that is more interactive, allowing users to see how the model changes in real-time. Simulators are used for training and experiments.
Industry
A type of business or money-making activity. e.g. movie-making industry, car-making industry.
Analyse
Examine something in detail to ensure you fully understand it.
Data-capture form
A form designed to collect data for a specific task.
Database
A computer application that is used to organise data that can then be stored, processed and accessed electronically.
Field
One column of a database.
User friendly
Easy to use or understand.
Data type
A particular way in which a computer can store data.
Integer
A whole number. e.g. 5, -1, 0, 9999
Primary key
A value that is unique for every record in a database and can be used to identify a record.
Field heading
The title of a field; a word or phrase used to describe the contents of a field in a database.
Spreadsheet
A computer application that uses rows and columns to organise data and carry out calculations using that data.
Cell
An area where a row and column intersect and data can be entered.
Cell reference
A combination of letters and numbers used to identify individual cells in a spreadsheet. e.g. the top left cell is A1
Range
Multiple cells grouped together. The cell reference for a range is the top left cell, followed by a ":", followed by the bottom right cell. e.g. B2:D3
Formula
A combination of numbers, mathematical symbols, cell references and functions used to process data in a spreadsheet.
Formula bar
An area in the spreadsheet window where a formula can be entered.
Query
The act of searching a database for records based on conditions the user inputs.
Comparison operators
Symbols used to compare values, e.g. >= meaning greater than or equal to.
Arithmetic operator
+, -, *, / and other symbols that can be used for maths.
Condition
Something that is checked to determine whether it is true or false.
Conditional formatting
The act of making a cell automatically look different depending on a specific rule.
