Baseline
Initial values that can be compared to future measurements. Pertains to vital signs, weight, labs, etc.
Height (ht)
The measurement of the length of the human body, from the sole of the foot to the top of the head.
Inventory/Belonging List
A detailed, itemized list, report, or record of belongings and valuables in the patient's/resident's/client's possession when admitting into a health care facility; it should be updated as the person acquires more belongings.
Scale
Device used to measure weight.
Weight (Wt)
The measure of how heavy something is; measured in units such as pounds or kilograms.
Bed Protector/Linen Protector
An item of removable bedding that is used to protect the bedding and mattress from soiling.
Bedside Stand
Night stand that is next to the patient's/resident's/clients bed. Contains drawers and is used to store small items such as the person's personal articles and hygiene equipment.
Call Light
A device used by patients/residents/clients that signals the health care staff for assistance. The patient/resident/client should always have this device within reach.
Circadian Rhythm
The 24-hour day-night cycle.
Closed Bed
A bed completely made with the bedspread and blankets in place.
Draw/Lift/Transfer Sheet
An extra sheet placed on top of the bottom sheet that is used for moving people in bed without causing shearing. Should be placed horizontally across the center of the bed from the person's shoulder to below their hip.
Emesis Basin
A kidney-shaped receptacle for the collection of fluids such as vomit; often used when giving mouth (oral) care.
Fan Fold
The process of folding linen like a fan to the side or bottom of the bed.
Mitered Corner
a corner that is made by folding and tucking the sheet so that it lies flat and neat against the mattress; it prevents friction and helps keep sheets tight.
Occupied Bed
A bed made while a person is still in the bed.
Open Bed
A bed made with the top linen folded down to the foot of the bed.
Overbed Table
A clean table that is placed over the bed for eating and other activities.
Privacy Curtain
This item extends all the way around the bed and protects the patient's/resident's/client's privacy by protecting them from public view.
Side Rails
Rails that can be attached to the side of a healthcare bed and raised to help with resident/patient safety and independent movement. Considered a restraint.
Toe Pleat
Loosening of the top bed linens at the foot of the bed to prevent pressure on the toes.
Unoccupied Bed
A bed made while no person is in the bed.
