Coach Bennett, please state your name and profession for the record.

My name is Sam Bennett, and for the last 20 years, I have been the head track and field coach at David Post High School.

Before you ever stepped onto a coaching whistle, what was the pinnacle of your own personal athletic career?

I was a world-class sprinter. I ran for the University of Texas and eventually earned a spot as an alternate on the United States Olympic 4x400 relay team.

How did it feel to represent your country as an Olympic alternate for a gold-winning relay team?

It was the greatest honor of my life. Seeing our team take the gold in Seoul confirmed everything I believed about hard work and the pursuit of excellence.

In your twenty years at David Post High School, what philosophy has guided your transformation of young runners into champions?

I believe in pushing athletes to find the greatness they didn't know they had. My goal has always been to build character through competition and to turn "average" into "elite.

You speak of the "Four D's"—can you explain to the jury how Discipline, Dedication, Direction, and endurance form the foundation of your program?

Those are the pillars of success. Discipline to do the work, Dedication to the team, Direction from the coaching staff, and endurance—the mental and physical toughness to finish the race.

How has this high standard of excellence resulted in your relay teams finishing in the top three of every meet for nearly two decades?

By demanding a championship work ethic every single day. We don't accept "good enough" at David Post; we train to be the best, and our record reflects that commitment.

Turning to August 8, 2025, what was at stake for your athletes during that particular practice?

We were preparing for the State track meet. My relay teams were the defending champions, and we were there to ensure we were ready to defend that title.

As the head coach, how did you structure the supervision of the various groups practicing that afternoon?

I oversaw the entire practice, but I delegated specific groups to my assistants. I was working with the starters at the northwest corner, while Coach Longoria was tasked with the direct supervision of the relay team.

[Using the aerial map (Exhibit 9)], can you show the jury where you were standing while the relay team was working with Coach Longoria?

I was at the northwest corner of the track (the top left of the field), focusing on the starting blocks to ensure our starts were explosive.

Why did you entrust the direct, line-of-sight supervision of the relay team to your assistant, Jo Longoria?

Jo is a capable coach with a Master’s degree. I trusted Jo to handle the mechanics of the relay exchange while I focused on the technical aspects of the starting line.

When you observed the relay team struggling with baton passes, what was your motivational intent in ordering the ladder drills?

Success in a relay depends on focus. When they kept dropping the baton, it showed a lack of concentration. The ladders weren't "punishment"; they were a tool to build the endurance and focus needed to perform under pressure.

How do you distinguish between a coach "pushing for greatness" and a coach "crossing a line"?

A coach pushes for greatness by demanding effort and resilience. Crossing the line would be intentional harm. I have always pushed my athletes because I care about their potential, never to put them in danger

Throughout that afternoon, what was your specific protocol for athlete hydration?

We had a hydration station on the sideline with water and Gatorade available at all times.

14

Beyond the scheduled 40-minute breaks, what standing invitation did your athletes have regarding their own need for water?

My athletes know that if they are thirsty or feeling the heat, they can go to the station. I expect them to be disciplined, but I never forbid a student from drinking water if they truly need it.

At approximately 6:45 p.m., while you were timing starting blocks at the northwest corner, what did you first observe regarding Arley James?

I saw the relay team heading toward the sideline and noticed Arley being assisted by teammates. It didn't look like a typical "tired" walk; it looked like something was wrong.

16
New cards

Once you realized the severity of Arley’s condition, what was your immediate command to Coach Longoria?

As soon as I got there and saw Arley's state, I realized it was a crisis. I immediately shouted for Coach Longoria to call 911.

[Referencing Exhibit 11] Why did you instruct the rest of the team to move to the shaded home stands according to these guidelines during the medical crisis?

Following our safety protocols, I needed the other athletes out of the sun and away from the emergency area so the paramedics would have room to work and the other kids wouldn't suffer from the heat as well.

18

[Referencing Exhibit 7] Coach, please look at the Health History Form. What did you rely on when assessing Arley’s physical readiness for extreme exertion?

I relied on this form, which was signed by Arley’s parent. It indicated no heart issues, no respiratory problems, and no underlying conditions that would limit participation.

19
New cards

Based on that form, what was your understanding regarding any medications Arley was taking?

The form explicitly stated "None" under the medication section. I had no reason to believe Arley was taking any substances, let alone a supplement like Strenaxal.

20

Had the word "Strenaxal" appeared on that document, how would your coaching approach for Arley have changed?

Everything would have changed. I would have consulted with the school nurse and likely limited Arley's exertion levels. I can only coach the athlete based on the medical information I am given.

21

After Arley was taken by the ambulance, what steps did you take to check on your athlete at the hospital?

I followed the ambulance to the hospital immediately. I stayed there, praying and waiting for news, until I was told that Arley had passed away.

Finally, Coach Bennett, you’ve heard the prosecution’s characterization of you today—how do you describe the bond you shared with Arley and the rest of your "children" on that track?

The prosecution sees a tyrant, but I see a family. I loved Arley like my own. I pushed Arley because I believed in Arley's dream to run in college. Losing Arley is a tragedy that haunts me every single day.
