Pain

An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage.

Gate Control Theory

A theory that suggests pain is modulated by a "gate" in our neurological system, which can be opened or closed by different types of nerve fibers. Opening the gate allows pain signals to be transmitted, while closing the gate inhibits pain signals.

Transduction

The process by which tissue damage is converted into electrical impulses (action potentials) that can be transmitted by nerve fibers.

Transmission

The conduction of pain impulses along nerve fibers, from the site of injury or stimulation to the brain and spinal cord.

Perception

The conscious awareness of pain, which involves the interpretation and processing of pain signals in the brain.

Modulation

The process of increasing or decreasing the transmission of pain signals throughout the nervous system. This can involve the release of neurotransmitters that either enhance or inhibit pain signals.

Nociceptive Pain

Pain that arises from actual or potential tissue damage and is transmitted through normally functioning nerve fibers.

Neuropathic Pain

Pain that is caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system. It is often chronic and can be characterized by burning, shooting, or tingling sensations.

Pain Threshold

The lowest intensity of pain that a person can recognize. It varies from person to person and can be influenced by factors such as genetics and previous experiences with pain.

Pain Tolerance

The greatest intensity of pain that an individual can endure. It is also highly individualized and can be influenced by factors such as age, gender, and emotional state.
