Communion of Saints
Another way of describing the Church, which is made up of all baptised people, including its members in heaven, those who are in Purgatory, and those who are still alive in the world.
Intercede
To speak on another person’s behalf, as when Mary or the saints pray to God for members of the Church.
The Rosary
A Marian devotion consisting of decades of prayers, each focussing on a different aspect of the life of Jesus and Mary, comprising one Our Father and ten Hail Marys per decade.
Luminous Mysteries
Also known as Mysteries of Light, these were introduced to the Rosary as recently as 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
The Angelus
A traditional Marian prayer that is prayed at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm.
Sanctus
The Latin word meaning ‘holy’, which is the root of the word ‘Saint’.
Tongues of Fire
A symbol of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Acts 2:1−4 that represents how the Spirit changes all who respond to it, just as fire changes whatever it touches.
Seven Sacraments
Special community celebrations including Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage.
Spirit of Wisdom
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to see the good in everything as God does, just as Jesus did.
Spirit of Understanding
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to understand the meaning of God’s actions, as Jesus did.
Spirit of Right Judgement
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to judge the true value of everything, as Jesus did.
Spirit of Courage
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the strength to meet personal challenges and overcome fears, even in the face of death.
Spirit of Knowledge
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to come to know God better and to learn new lessons from experiences of God.
Spirit of Reverence
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to keep growing in respect for God and awareness of God’s closeness and love.
Spirit of Wonder and Awe
A gift of the Holy Spirit providing the ability to keep returning love to God for all God’s gifts.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Positive qualities that grow within people who respond to the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Capital Sins
Another term for the ‘seven deadly’ sins: pride, avarice, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and sloth.
Avarice
A deadly sin involving greed; the Holy Spirit empowers people to overcome it by donating money to those in need and sharing generously.
Sloth
A deadly sin involving laziness or neglect of responsibilities; the Holy Spirit empowers people to overcome it by working or studying with determination.
Memorare
A Marian prayer that begins, "Remember, most loving Virgin Mary, never was it heard that anyone who turned to you for help was left unaided."
