What is the primary function of the stomach?
To digest food received from the esophagus and pass partially digested food, known as chyme, into the duodenum.
What are the four parts of the stomach?
Cardia, fundus, body (corpus gastricum), and antrum (pylorus).
What is gastritis?
An acute or chronic inflammation of the stomach, often caused by H. pylori or long-term NSAID and alcohol use.
What causes peptic ulcer disease?
The two most common causes are H. pylori infections and prolonged use of NSAIDs.
What is the small intestine?
A coiled, muscular tube divided into three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
How long is the duodenum?
About 10 inches long.
What is the primary absorption site in the small intestine?
The ileum, which is the last and longest section.
What is the length of the large intestine?
About 5 feet long.
What does the large intestine do with water?
It reabsorbs water as food material travels through it.
What are the portions of the colon?
Ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon.
