Aircraft Fuel Servicing
The movement of fuel to or from an approved external source to or from an aircraft, including connection time and verify checks.
Bonding
Electrically connecting two or more components of a system to equalize voltage potential.
Cathodic Protection
A means of protecting metals from corrosion by making the metal the cathode of an electrolytic cell.
Concurrent Servicing
Simultaneous servicing of fuel or oxygen while passengers are on board or during minor maintenance, fleet servicing, or cargo loading.
Integrated Combat Turnaround (ICT)
A process to recover and re-launch an aircraft in minimum time through simultaneous fueling, munitions loading, and inspections.
Deadman Control
A switch or valve requiring continuous positive hand pressure by the operator to maintain fuel flow.
Flash Point
The lowest temperature at which vapors arising from fuel will ignite momentarily on application of a flame or spark.
Fuel Servicing Safety Zone (FSSZ)
The area within 50feet of pressurized fuel components and 25feet around aircraft fuel vent outlets.
Hot Refueling
The movement of fuel into or out of aircraft fuel tanks while one or more aircraft engines are operating.
Intrinsically Safe
Equipment and wiring incapable of producing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to cause ignition of flammable mixtures.
Lower Flammable Limit (LFL)
The minimum concentration of vapor-to-air where flame will occur with an ignition source and continue to propagate.
Switch Loading
The introduction of a low volatility fuel (like JP-8) into a tank containing residue of a high volatility fuel (like JP-4), or vice versa.
Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF)
A fire suppression system used during aircraft emergencies to extinguish fuel fires.
Hydrant Hose Truck (HHT)
A self-propelled unit capable of dispensing up to 1200GPM (Gallons Per Minute) from a hydrant system to an aircraft.
Class I Fuel Spill
A fuel spill involving an area less than 2feet in any plane dimension.
Class II Fuel Spill
A fuel spill involving an area not over 10feet in any dimension or not over 50square feet and not continuing.
Class III Fuel Spill
A fuel spill over 10feet in any dimension, or over 50square feet, or of a continuing nature; considered a ramp mishap.
Joint Petroleum Office (JPO)
The office responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all phases of bulk petroleum support within a combatant command theater.
Pre-positioned War reserve Requirements (PWRR)
The fuel required to support a campaign until normal lines of communication are established.
Operating Stocks (OS)
The amount of fuel product required to sustain peacetime operations in support of military demands.
Quality Assurance (QA)
A system of activities focused on assuring product and service compliance from a commercial contractor.
Quality Surveillance (QS)
Measures establishment to monitor the quality and quantity of government-owned product in the supply chain.
Inland Petroleum Distribution System (IPDS)
A military coupled pipeline system used to move bulk petroleum forward from rear area storage.
Differential Pressure (DP)
The pressure drop across a filter vessel, used to determine if filter elements are contaminated or spent.
Filter Separator
A two-stage vessel designed to extract solids (first stage) and coalesce/remove free water (second stage) from fuel.
API Gravity
A special function of specific gravity used to convert fuel volumes at measured temperatures to standard reference temperatures (60∘F).
Fuel System Icing Inhibitor (FSII)
An additive (DiEGME) used to prevent water in fuel from freezing and to provide biocidal protection.
Static Dissipator Additive (SDA)
An additive (e.g., Stadis 450) used to increase fuel conductivity and aid in the relaxation of static charges.
REPOL
The Bulk Petroleum Contingency Report providing summary information on inventories and distribution system damage assessment.
POLCAP
The Bulk Petroleum Capabilities Report assessing fuel support capabilities for contingency requirements in a specific theater.
