Government Gazette
The first English-language newspaper in Malaysia, published in Penang on 1 March 1806 and later renamed to 'Prince of Wales Island Gazette'.
A.B. Bone
The entrepreneur under the East India Company who established the 'Government Gazette' specifically for colonialists and expatriates.
The Straits Echo
A daily newspaper published in Penang from 1903 to 1986 that claimed to be the first English-language paper representing the Chinese community.
The Malaya Tribune
A daily newspaper started in 1914 to champion aspirations and protect the rights of the Malayan Asian population; it ended in 1951.
Jawi Peranakan
The first Malay-language newspaper in Singapore (1876), established to spread information from British, Arab, and Egyptian views.
Utusan Melayu (1907)
A Malay newspaper published by the Singapore Free Press that aimed to provide the Malay community with an 'intelligent and impartial view' of world news.
Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah
Regarded as 'the father of Malay journalism,' he was an editor for Utusan Melayu and later Lembaga Melayu who championed the Malay cause.
Lembaga Melayu
The Malay edition of the English newspaper The Malaya Tribune, which became the voice of moderate, progressive Malay opinion starting in 1914.
Radio Malaya
The public broadcaster for Singapore and the Federation of Malaya established on 1 April 1946; it was later split into two studios after Independence in 1957.
Radio Malaysia
The name given to Radio Malaya on 16 September 1969.
Rangkaian National
The nation's first 24-hour radio station, which Radio Malaysia became on 1 January 1971.
Televisyen Malaysia
The government-owned station that began the first TV broadcast in black and white on 28 December 1963.
Tunku Abdul Rahman
The Prime Minister who officially launched Malaysia's first black and white television broadcast at 6:00pm in 1963.
Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM)
The organization formed in 1979 through the merger of Televisyen Malaysia and Radio Malaysia.
The Shaw Brothers
The figures who dominated the cinema and film industry from the 1930s to the 1960s, producing films that were a major source of original entertainment in Asia.
P. Ramlee
Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh; a visionary artist who shaped Malaysian cinema in the 1950s-1960s through Shaw Brothers' Malay Film Productions (MFP).
