Settlement
A permanent collection of buildings where people reside, work, and obtain services.
Urbanization
The process by which the population of urban settlements grows, characterized by an increase in both the percentage and number of people living in urban areas.
Global South
Refers to countries where urbanization is occurring at a faster rate compared to Global North countries.
Consumer Services
Services that provide direct support to individual consumers, such as hairdressing.
Public Services
Services that provide security and protection for citizens and businesses, including federal services.
Clustered Rural Settlement
An agricultural-based community where families live in close proximity, typically surrounded by fields.
Dispersed Rural Settlement
A settlement characterized by individual farms spaced apart rather than grouped together.
Global City
A major center for service provision in the global economy, defined by economic, political, cultural, and infrastructural factors.
Megacity
An urban settlement with a total population in excess of 10 million people.
Central Place Theory
A theory of consumption and distribution that explains the location of services based on market areas and customer demand.
Primate City
A city that is disproportionately concentrated with services and economic activity compared to other cities in the region.
Periodic Market
A market that occurs at specific intervals where individual vendors gather to sell goods and services.
Services Involving Sharing
Services that have rapidly expanded, particularly in areas like transportation and lodging, challenging traditional classifications of services.
Rank-Size Rule
A concept that states the nth largest settlement has 1/n the population of the largest settlement.
Threshold
The minimum number of people needed to support a service.
Range
The maximum distance people are willing to travel to use a service.
Density
The measure of how many or few of something exist within a given area.
Heterogeneity
The variety or diversity of different types of something within an area.
Business Services
Services that facilitate the activities of other businesses, such as IT and transportation services.
