Scene Safety
Always check scene safety first when responding to emergencies.
CPR Compression Rate for Adults
100-120 compressions per minute at a depth of at least 2 inches (5 cm).
CPR Compression Depth for Children
At least one third the depth of the chest, approximately 2 inches or 5 cm.
CPR Compression Depth for Infants
One third the depth of the chest, about 1.5 inches (4 cm).
Jaw Thrust
Technique used to open the airway for suspected neck injuries.
Head Tilt-Chin Lift
Technique for opening the airway when no neck injury is suspected.
AED
Automated External Defibrillator; used to restore regular cardiac rhythms.
Compression to Breath Ratio for Adult CPR (1 rescuer)
30 compressions to 2 breaths.
Compression to Breath Ratio for Infant CPR (1 rescuer)
30 compressions to 2 breaths using the two thumb-encircling technique.
Heimlich Maneuver
Abdominal thrusts used to expel an object from a responsive adult or child.
Responsive Infant Choking Procedure
Perform 5 back slaps followed by 5 chest thrusts until the object is removed or the infant becomes unresponsive.
Unresponsive Infant Protocol
Begin CPR while looking for and removing obstructed objects.
Switching Rescuers During CPR
Rotate every 2 minutes or every 5 cycles to reduce fatigue.
Age Classification for CPR
Infant: birth to 1 year, Child: 1 to 8 years, Adult: 8 years and older.
