executive order that freed slaves in rebel states & made war abt slavery, ending chances of foreign aid & allowing black enlistment

Crittenden compromise

attempt to compromise b/w N & S directly after Sumter, guarantees slavery forever, FSA, slavery in DC & MO comp line, never passed

13th amendment

abolishes slavery

14th Amendment

equal protection of laws to Deal w/black codes, Birthright citz, abolish 3/5ths, ppl who rebel can’t be in gov (vote to let in), insurrection debt paid by rebelling states

15th amendment

black male suffrage

Proclamation of Amnesty & Reconstruction

aka 1/10ths plan, exec order that pardons south, gives easy loyalty oath to 10% of S & abolish slavery to rejoin Union

Wade-davis bill

requires majority of white men that haven’t helped confed take the oath in order to be readmitted to union, pocket vetoed by Lincoln

Reconstruction Act of 1867

creates 5 military districts of S, new rules for statehood & strips confeds of power

Civil Rights Act of 1866

enforcement for 14th Amendment

Freedman's Bureau

gov agency helping S not stave, education, voting etc., og leased for one year but later renewed

Command of Office Act

makes Prez not C in C; pass orders through Grant

Tenure of Office Act

Prez getting rid of cabinet member needs Senate approval

The compromise of 1877

not rlly legislation but the agreement to solve disputed election results, Hayes agrees to remove fed troops fro S etc.

The Homestead Act of 1862

lets any citz/prospective citz claim 160 acres of public land & purchase it after living on it for 5 yrs

The Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862

gave state gov public acreage to sell & use $ for public education, made a bunch of state colleges, made high tariffs

Pacific Railway Act

creates Union Pacific Railroad company (fed chartered comp that builds W from NE) that meets w/central pacific comp from CA

The National Bank Acts

creates new nat banking system that banks can join if enough $ & invest it, uniform bank notes

Confiscation Act

all slaves in support of Confed military freed, later acts abolished slavery in DC & W territories & compensated owners, Second Confiscation Act freed slaves of anyone aiding insurrection, allowed prez to employ black ppl

Food draft

confed rule that lets soldiers seize crops on farms

Civil Rights Act of 1875

mandate school integration but relevant provisions removed before it was passed

Specie resumption act

made by grant, in 1879, greenback dollars will be redeemed w/new cert pegged to price of gold -> makes it harder for debtors
