Explain the acronym MAIN and how it impacted WWI

The acronym for MAIN lists Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and nationalism. Due to these difficulties, tensions rose. Many European countries battled for power. Several different governments are present and are no longer just monarchies. These four things impacted WW1 because they created long-term causes and transformed many future crises leading into the war.

Describe the tactics used during WWI and why the death toll was so high

Some important tactics used in WW1 are trench warfare and weapons. The trenches were dug into the ground on each side for protection. The reason why the trenches were not effective, and the death rate was so high, was that the conditions were bad and there was little food, many dead people just sitting around, and lots of disease. Weapons used during the war were machine guns, gas weapons, mustard gas, tanks, grenades, and flamethrowers. The overall death toll was so high using tactics because the tactics just added more difficulty to the war, and using them became nearly impossible.

Discuss the rise of Totalitarianism and the leaders who rose to power in different countries

Totalitarianism is a system of government in which a single unopposed party exerts total and repressive control over all aspects of its citizens' lives. With totalitarianism comes 2 examples, including Germany and USSR governments. The German government has the Nazi Party and fascism, and the USSR government has the Communist Party. Some traits of totalitarianism are that one party rules and one group of people is in charge with complete control. Some leaders who rose to power using totalitarianism are Adolf Hitler and Emperor Hirohito.

Discuss the outbreak of WWII in Europe

The problems of Europe during WW2 included Germany and Italy. These countries have built up militaries ready to invade other countries at the first sign of conflict. A major problem is that the League of Nations cannot enforce the laws because it is behind the US. Another problem is that treaties made war “illegal”, but no one could get every country to sign and prevent war. These problems made the outbreak more complicated and a longer period of time; different government systems were also implicated.

Explain the following: Operation Overlord, Operation Torch, Stalingrad

Operation Overlord (D-Day), Operation Torch, and Stalingrad are related because they are turning points that shifted the Allied powers' defensive posture and resulted in the defeat of Nazi Germany. Operation Overlord, also known as D-Day, included English and American forces that invaded the beaches of Normandy, France. With this battle, the Allies retake France and drive the Germans back to Germany. Operation Torch was the Allies' and the US's plan to retake North Africa and use the Mafia for intelligence. Stalingrad is considered the bloodiest battle in history, but it ended German expansion and began their retreat.

Describe the Nuremberg Trials. Why were they important? What were the charges? What was the outcome?

The Nuremberg trials were a very important part of the holocaust. The trials lasted a long period of time, including 216 trials of fighting with Nazi leaders. The Nazi leaders were called out for committing war crimes during World War II. The trials were long because of the foreign languages throughout the courtroom. The charges consisted of murder, sexual crimes, harassment, etc. In the end, 11 people were executed, and the people who were sentenced suffered death by hanging. The Nazis explained how the war crimes they committed were not against the law if it was under Hitler's rule. The Nazis just claimed that they were just following the orders of Hitler. Propaganda, antisemitism, and conformity were used by the Nazis in many different ways, not under Hitler's rule. Therefore, the Nuremberg trials are an important part of history.

Discuss the importance of the Cold war

The Cold War is the period of tensions and arms racing between the USSR and the US from the late 1940s until 1989. This was a battle of political and economic ideas done through military buildup and conflict. The main idea and importance were capitalism and democracy vs. communism. The Cold War was a break-out of many different events in time, including the building of the Berlin Wall and the proxy wars. The importance and the legacy of the Cold War were the length of the war and the cost. The conflicts left the Soviet Union unemployed and caused border conflicts; also, there are growing democratic governments around the world to this day.

Discuss the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and how these two ideas got us involved in several armed conflicts throughout the world

The Truman Doctrine included President Harry Truman, who said the world is divided into two camps. The two “camps” would be divided into 1. Good, democratic, and 2. Evil, communist, Soviet. Harry Truman vows that the US will protect all “free people” from the communist threat. The Marshall Plan is a plan on George Marshall’s urging that the US believes that giving European nations money to rebuild will influence them to resist soviet influence and communism. These events got the US involved through a major topic of shifting the US from being isolated to being involved in a short amount of time. Using the plans, this created the proxy wars.

What is the lasting impact of WWI, WWII, and the Cold War? Have these left us in a better or worse place? Why?

In WW1, militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism shaped how future events would be handled and maintained by the military. This left us in a good place because it created a system of rules that were established with it that are still being used today. World War II was also a good event that shaped the US as a world superpower. While there was conflict with The Final Solution, the Battle of France, and the Battle of Britain, these events provided a learning experience for the US as an ally. Pearl Harbor was an important experience because nearly every American supported going to war, so that is what they did. The Cold War shaped the US because of how government groups are followed within Capitalism and Democracy. It impacted the US because democracies have grown around the world and provide different opportunities and opinions for people.

There were 3 psychological reasons for why the Nazis/Germans followed along with the Holocaust. Explain the 3 reasons.

The three psychological reasons for why the Nazis/Germans followed along with the Holocaust include conformity to authority, dehumanization of victims, and the influence of propaganda. Individuals felt compelled to obey orders from leaders, while propaganda portrayed Jews and other targeted groups as subhuman, justifying their persecution in the minds of many. This combination of social pressure and scapegoating led to widespread complicity in the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. The three psychological reasons for the Nazis/Germans' participation in the Holocaust include adherence to authority, dehumanization of the victims, and the effects of pervasive propaganda. Many individuals complied with orders due to the pressure from authoritative figures, while propaganda shaped perceptions that depicted Jews and other minorities as less than human, making their persecution seem acceptable. This synergy of obedience and social rhetoric significantly contributed to the widespread participation in the horrific acts of the Holocaust.

Its legacy includes the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the division of Europe, and the promotion of democratic movements worldwide.

Explain the interwar period from the American perspective

The interwar period refers to the time between World War I and World War II, characterized by economic instability, the Great Depression, and shifts in political attitudes in America. From the American perspective, this era saw a move towards isolationism, the rise of the New Deal policies to combat economic hardship, and a growing disillusionment with international engagements, setting the stage for the eventual involvement in WWII. This period also included cultural shifts, like the Roaring Twenties, followed by the economic crash of 1929, leading to widespread unemployment and societal changes. The American focus shifted inward as citizens sought recovery, while tensions in Europe grew, ultimately impacting U.S. foreign policy.
