JANE: I do hope you find it. (CAROLINE sidles up to BINGLEY.)
Forgive me, but I must steal my brother away for just a moment.
ELIZABETH: She's worse than she sounds. I need to see how she is.
Mr. Darcy, you are quite distracted this morning. I'm sure I can guess the subject of your reverie. You're considering how insupportable it would be to pass your days in the country, and in such society.
DARCY: You're quite wrong. My mind was more agreeably engaged.
What by?
DARCY: A pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman.
And what lady has inspired such reflections?
ELIZABETH: Yes, thank you. (He points to the guest room and ELIZABETH goes to JANE. BINGLEY and CAROLINE play cards. DARCY writes a letter.)
I sense an invasion. Invite one Bennet, invite them all.
BINGLEY: Miss Bennet will be more at ease in her sister's care.
She walked here across three miles of dirt and mud! It makes for a loathsome sort of conceited independence.
BINGLEY: Her affection for her sister is to be admired.
I'm curious to know, Mr. Darcy— Has this adventure affected your admiration of Miss Elizabeth's fine eyes?
BINGLEY: Is that book to your taste, Miss Elizabeth? There is a whole library full of them if you'd care for another. Of course it's nothing like the library Darcy has at Pemberley.
When you build your house, Charles, we can only hope it might be half as sublime as Pemberley.
ELIZABETH: Is a house really worth so much fuss?
Pemberley isn't merely a house. It's a symbol of how things should be. The proper order. The lady of such a house— Well.
JANE: Mr. Bingley is gone. (JANE gives ELIZABETH the note. CAROLINE appears in a second space.)
My dear friend, you've been so kind as to show me the very best of Meryton. However, we are leaving for London today and will not return to Netherfield this winter.
