Great Britain
A geographic area consisting of 3 countries: England, Scotland, and Wales.
The UK
A political entity consisting of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The British Isles
A group of islands consisting of 5 countries: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland (including other surrounding islands).
The European Union (EU) Aims
To promote economic and social progress, provide a 'voice' for Europe, allow free travel/residence for citizens, ensure safety without war, and create laws protecting citizen rights.
Brexit
The outcome of the 2016 vote where the UK decided to leave the EU, a process that completed between March 2017 and January 2020.
Sovereignty
An argument for leaving the EU stating that decisions about the UK should be made in the UK.
Scale
The ratio showing how much a map must be enlarged to get the actual size of the area, such as 1:25000 where 1cm on the map is 25000cm in real life.
Measuring Curved Distances
A process using a scrap piece of paper and a pen as a pivot to follow sections of a road, then converting the marked length using the map scale.
Sustainability
Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Environmental Footprint
The impact of cities and towns on the surrounding area in terms of pollution and use of natural resources.
Social Sustainability (Curitiba Example)
Provided through affordable housing with running water and electricity, and green spaces for exercise to keep residents healthy.
Economic Sustainability (Curitiba Example)
Achieved by training residents for the construction industry and providing reliable, cheap public transport so people can reach work on time.
Environmental Sustainability (Curitiba Example)
Promoted by allowing the urban poor to trade collected rubbish for food and using public transport that produces less pollution than cars.
Weather
The daily changing conditions of the atmosphere, including temperature and the presence of rain.
Climate
The average weather conditions of a location over a long period of time, usually 30 days.
Extreme Weather
Any weather event that is severe, unseasonal, or significantly different from the average or usual weather patterns.
2003 Drought
An extreme weather event caused by lack of rainfall and warm summers, leading to hosepipe bans and 2,000 deaths.
2018 Heatwave
A period of unusually high temperatures (35.3∘C) that caused wildfires and roads to melt.
The Beast from the East
A 2018 snowstorm with 50cm of snow and temperatures as low as 12∘C that caused school closures and transport disruption.
Storm Ali
A 2018 event with gusts up to 91mph that caused 2 deaths from falling debris and extensive power outages.
Climate Graph
A graph used to show the two main components of climate: temperature and rainfall.
