Flag football
A non-contact sport emphasizing speed and strategy over physical strength, played with teams trying to score by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone.
Shotgun formation
A positioning where the quarterback stands several yards behind the line of scrimmage to receive the snap.
Offensive Lineman
A player who specializes in blocking for the quarterback during offensive plays.
Scramble
When a quarterback leaves the protected area of the offensive line to run the ball, either to avoid a sack or to gain yardage.
Blitz
A defensive tactic where multiple players rush the quarterback to disrupt plays.
Snap
The action of passing the ball backwards from the center to initiate a play from scrimmage.
Tackle
The act of stopping an opponent by grabbing them, either to prevent advancement or to strip the ball.
Offside
An infraction occurring when a player is on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage at the time of the snap.
Running Back
A player in the offensive backfield responsible for receiving handoffs, catching passes, and blocking.
Extra Point
An attempt to score one additional point following a touchdown by kicking the ball through the uprights.
Goal Line
The line that separates the end zone from the field of play.
Punt
A kick performed by dropping the ball and kicking it before it hits the ground, usually on fourth down.
Touchdown
A score worth six points made when a team crosses into the end zone with the ball.
Field Goal
A score achieved by kicking the ball through the goalposts, worth three points.
Fumble
When an offensive player loses possession of the ball after dropping it.
Interception
When a defensive player catches a pass thrown by the quarterback of the opposing team.
Red Zone
The area between the 20-yard line and the goal line, significant for scoring opportunities.
Sack
When the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball.
Quarterback
The play caller on the offensive team who initiates the play.
Down
A measure of play in football; the offensive team has four downs to gain ten yards.
Completion
When an offensive player successfully catches a pass.
Line of Scrimmage
An imaginary line where the play begins and teams cannot cross until the snap.
False Start
An infraction where an offensive player moves once in a set position before the snap.
Huddle
A gathering of players to strategize or motivate before a play.
Center (position)
The innermost lineman who snaps the ball to the quarterback.
End Zone
The area at the end of the field where touchdowns are scored.
Neutral Zone
The area that extends the length of the football from one tip to another, preventing players from crossing before the snap.
Pigskin
A slang term for the football.
Secondary
The defensive backs in football who cover receivers and defend passes.
Hail Mary
A desperate long throw toward the end zone, usually done when time is running out.
First Down
Achieved when the offensive team moves the ball at least ten yards within four plays.
Safety
Worth two points; occurs when an offensive player is tackled in their own end zone.
Hash Marks
Lines on the field indicating placement for the ball at the time of the next play.
Intentional Grounding
When a quarterback throws the ball away without a receiver present to avoid being sacked.
The area formed by the offensive line around the quarterback during a passing play.
Fair Catch
An attempt to catch a kicked ball without interference from the kicking team.
