Red Blood Cell Structure
Large surface area, contains haemoglobin to pick up oxygen, no nucleus to make room for more oxygen.
Red Blood Cell Function
Carries oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide from the body to the lungs.
White Blood Cell (Phagocytes) Function
Moves around and engulfs bacterium.
Plasma
Liquid part of blood. A dilute solution of salts, glucose, amino acids, vitamins, urea, protein and fats.
White blood cell
Involved in immune system
Platelets
Involved in blood clotting
Red Blood cells
Involved in carrying oxygen
How does blood circulate around the body?
Cardiovascular disease
Set of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels
Coronary arteries
Branch off of the aorta and supply the heart muscle with O2.
Heart attack
Failure of the heart to function properly
Atherosclerosis
Artery narrowed by plaque making it difficult for blood to flow; smaller arteries can be blocked completely.
Angina
Chest pains resulting from reduced blood flow due to atherosclerosis.
Stroke
Can result if a blood vessel is blocked in the brain.
