The Civil Rights Movement
a social movement for equal application of law when it comes to voting rights, fair employment, racial segregation in restaurant, schools, housing, public welfare assistance, etc. Not just a black or white issue, but all races. Started in 1955 after the lynching and murder of Emmett Till. Not “Separate but Equal”, but TRULY equal.
Levittown
suburban subdivisions built for white veterans and their new familied after returning from WW2 not SUPPOSED to be segregated, but was. The very beginning of suburbs, ties into the nuclear family.
Redlining
discriminatory practice where financial services were denied or limited to neighborhoods based on race or ethnic composition, historically reinforcing segregation and economic inequality.
Brown v. Board of Education (1954)
a landmark supreme court case that declared racial segregation in schools unconstitutional, overturning the “Separate but Equal” doctrine.
Nuclear Family
the perfect image of a suburban white family at the time; Dad going out to work, Mom staying home with the kids. Ties into Levittowns, who was “supposed” to be staying there.
Baby Boom
significant increase of birth because of the veterans coming back from war, 1946-1964
Rock and Roll
new genre of music evolved from blues. Music that defined rebellion, a musical outlet to express themselves. Integration of music, dancing, having fun, young people coming together.
Freedom Rides
civil rights activists who rode interstate busses and travel. A way for african americans and white people to come together to desegregate the bus lines. A means of protesting.
Cuban Missile Crisis
gave african americans a political voice as they agreed with how JFK was handling the crisis. The crisis prompted civil rights leaders to link their domestic goals with the global struggle for peace.
SCLC
southern christian leadership conference; an african american civil rights organization that was established by many civil rights activists such as Ella Baker, and many black college students to coordinate and assist local organizations working for the full equality of african americans in all aspects of american life using non violent protesting.
March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
mlk speech, civil rights protest held in front of the lincoln memorial to demand more racial equality in employment, poverty and housing situations. Crossed racial lines, not just a black thing. Initially threatend by a philip randoph, unionize sleeping car workers. he attended but wasn’t given credit. The bridge.
Selma March
a political march led by mlk from selma, alabama, to montgomery, alabama from march 21st-25th 1965. Local police tried to stop this violently, hosing them down.
Grassroots Workers
local individuals who lead, organize, and mobilize communities from the ground up to address social, economic, or political issues, often focusing on equity, justice, and empowerment. Every movement created by a grassroots worker. Usually started by women.
SNCC
student nonviolent coordinating committee founded at shaw university; black college students who advocated for nonviolent protesting, and participated in sit-ins, direct-action protests, the freedom rides, voter registration drives, freedom summer, the march on washington, and advocacy of the civil rights act.
Feminine Mystique
written by betty friedan; shapes the idea of women wanting to work, birth control, the anti nuclear family/wanting mroe than that. rise of a new wave feminine movement
War on Poverty
set federal programs to help poor americans, comes from great society. the reason we have social sevices.
Voting Rights Act
repealed stuff like literacy tests for voting for african americans and the grandfather clause, some had to site the constitution and guess how many beans are in a jar.
