Area
The space inside a two-dimensional figure, which is expressed in square units.
Equivalent ratio
Two ratios are equivalent if you can multiply each of the values in the first ratio by the same number to get the values in the second ratio; for example, 3:2 is equivalent to 6:4 because 3×2=6 and 2×2=4.
Proportional (relationship)
A relationship where you can multiply the values for one variable by the same number to get the values for the other variable; its graph is a straight line passing through the origin, (0,0).
Scale
A specification that tells us how the actual measurements of an object are represented in a drawing, such as 1 inch on a drawing representing 8 feet in the actual room.
Scaled copy
A copy of an image that may change in size but always maintains the shape and angle measurements of the original by multiplying every length in the original figure by the same number.
Scale drawing
A two-dimensional representation of an actual object or place, like floor plans and maps, where all measurements correspond to the measurements of the actual object by the same scale.
Scale factor
The number that every length of the original shape is multiplied by to produce the scaled copy, such as the scale factor from ABCD to A′B′C′D′ being 2.
