Describe transcription
Hydrogen bonds break so DNA unzips, RNA nucleotides line up against template strand due to complementary base pairings. Form phosphodiester bonds via condensation reaction, catalyzed by RNA polymerase. Created a strand of mRNA. Exits the nucleus by nuclear pores.
Describe translation
mRNA connects to ribosome. Begins reading at the start codon. tRNA carrying amino acids joins codons due to complementary base pairings. Amino acids form peptide bonds due to condensation reaction. Created primary structure of a protein.
What happens in the rER?
Primary structure enters rER. Gets modified and folded into secondary and tertiary structure. Packaged into transport vesicle
What happens in the Golgi apparatus?
Vesicle bonds with Golgi and protein exits. Modified in Golgi then packaged into another vesicle so it can exit the cell via exocytosis
