Otitis Externa

Inflammation of the external ear.

Otitis

Ear inflammation or ear infection.

Externa

Of the outside; contrasted with interna, which means of the inside.

Cocci

Round bacteria which may appear in chains or bunches.

Rods

A type of bacteria identified in ear cytologies, such as Pseudomonas or Proteus.

Yeast

A common cause for Otitis Externa, often identified as Malassezia.

Malassezia

The specific identification for yeast found in ear cytology.

Ear mites

Parasites that are looked for during the evaluation of ear cytologies.

Ear Mite Slide

One of the two types of exams that should be done for a complete ear evaluation.

Microorganism slide

One of the two types of exams that should be done for a complete ear evaluation to identify bacteria and yeast.

Pseudomonas or Proteus

Examples of rod-shaped bacteria that may be identified in an ear cytology.
