The Kurds

The Kurds are an indigenous ethnic group native to a mountainous region spanning parts of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran.

  • Religiously, most Kurds are Sunni Muslims, but ethnically and linguistically they are distinct from Arabs, Turks, and Persians.

  • Following World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Western powers promised the Kurds an independent state but failed to deliver, leaving them as the world's largest ethnic group without a country of their own.

  • The kurds are STATELESS
