The Kurds
The Kurds are an indigenous ethnic group native to a mountainous region spanning parts of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran.
Religiously, most Kurds are Sunni Muslims, but ethnically and linguistically they are distinct from Arabs, Turks, and Persians.
Following World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Western powers promised the Kurds an independent state but failed to deliver, leaving them as the world's largest ethnic group without a country of their own.
