The right side of the heart contains what type of blood from the body traveling to the lungs?
deoxygenated
The left side of the heart takes what type of blood from the lungs to the rest of the body?
oxygenated
When the blood is deoxygenated it is moving from ..... to ...... from.....
superior/inferior vena cavas TO
pulmonary artery FROM heart
Oxygenated blood is moving from.... to ...... from.....
pulmonary vein TO heart
aorta FROM heart
Why are arteries thicker than veins?
They are under constant pressure from the heart and blood flow, so they need to be strong enough to hold against the pressure, they contain muscles
What are the 3 branches of the aortic arch?
1. brachiocephalic artery
2. left common carotid
3. left subclavian artery
Where do the branches of arterys come off of on the heart?
the aortic arch
What is the division of the left subclavian artery?
left vertebral and axillary
What is the division of the brachiocephalic artery?
carotid, subclavian
When an axillary artery passes the ....... muscle it becomes the brachial artery?
tendon of the teres major
When the brachial artery passes through the elbow crease, it breaks into what arteries?
ulnar and radial arteries
What is a collateral artery?
branches from other arteries, typically rejoins w/ other arteries distally
What is a recurrent artery?
branches & turns around to direct blood flow in the opposite direction. Hooks a U turn
What are interosseus arteries?
arteries that supply the muslces of the forearm
The brachial artery supplies theses muslces: (3)
biceps brachii, triceps brachii, coracobrachialis
The anterior ulnar recurrent artery supplies these 3 areas:
elbow, pronator teres, brachialis
The elbow, forearm flexors is supplied by this artery
posterior ulnar recurrent artery
The deep anterior forearm is supplied by this artery
anterior interosseous artery
The posterior interosseous artery supplies this:
deep posterior forearm
The radial recurrent artery supplies these 2 muscles
brachioradialis, brachialis
What forms the four arterial arches of the hand?
palmar carpal, dorsal carpal, deep palmar, superficial palmar
Palmar capral and dorsal capral arterial arches are deep or superficial?
superficial
Which arterial arch in the hand is mostly radial artery?
Deep Palmar arch
Which artery arch supplies intrinsic hand muslces ?
Deep Palmar arch
Which artery arch in the hand supplies the thenar muslces & intrinsic hand muslces?
superficial palmar arch
Which arterial arch in the hand is mostly ulnar artery?
Superficial palmar arch
Which vein is mostly used for blood draws?
Median antebrachial / median cubital vein
What are the 3 deep veins in the arm?
Radial, ulnar, palmar venous arches
Median cubital vein is considered deep or superificial?
superficial
Radial vein is a deep vein that runs alongside this superficial vein?
Cephalic
Basilic is a superficial vein that runs alongside this deep vein?
Ulnar
The radial vein is deep to what vein?
Median cubital vein in the cubital fossa
Blood pressure is measured via what artery? placed where?
Brachial , just above antecubital fossa
Radial arteries can be used for blood pressure, but why wouldn't you want to?
it is further down the artery track, so if the patient has blood flow concerns you wouldn't get the best reading of their BP , so it could be weaker
When you want a pulse rate via at the wrist, what type of pulse is that?
radial pulse, at the radial artery
When there is a cuff on the arm to take a pulse, what artery are you using?
Brachial pulse on the brachial artery
BP cuff for pulse IS NOT good when a patient has this condition?
AFib
What vein should NOT be used for blood draws & why?
basilic vein, it lies close to the brachial nerve/artery
What is a lesser common vein to draw blood from but can be used?
Cephalic vein , it just rolls around
What veins does a PICC line go into usually?
basilic, brachial, cephalic
PICC lines are high risk for infection, why?
They are inserted in veins, so the infection can travel directly to the heart...
Central lines are inserted in what veins?
Internal jugular
Ports are inserted in what veins & why do they use ports?
subclavian, to recieve chemo/antibotics, longterm medicine
What is the most common site for lines & drains on the artery side?
Radial artery in the wrist
If an arterial line pulls out of someone, what is the danger?
blood spewing everywhere on that bih
What is a AV fistula? What is it used for?
Connect an artery & a vein to create a larger area to stick w/ lines/needles. It is used for dialysis uslally
What are the 2 arteries/veins preferred for an AV fistula?
radiocephalic, brachiocephalic
What is the purpose of an LVAD?
help stimulate left ventricle to send blood out arteries , short term waiting for new heart
Who died because his girlfriend cut his LVAD wire?
Denny :(
What is an IABP?
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump
When someone has an IABP what controls the heart rhythm?
the balloon inside the heart is connected to the machine outside the body, that pumps it according to their rhythm
What does ECMO stand for and what does it do?
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
Insert a tube in the body that connects to a pump/oxygenator that pumps the body through the body. The heart DOES NOT DO ANYTHING AT ALL.
Veno-Venous Cannulation follows what rotation?
PUmps blood from femoral artery, to the 'heart' (pump), then to the oxygenator machine, then to the internal jugular then to hte right atrium of heart
Veno-arterial Cnnulation follows what rotation?
starts at femoral vein, goes to pump, then oxygenator, then femoral arterys
The right collecting duct of the lymphatic system drains where?
head, neck, right arm
The left collecting duct of the lymphatic system drains where?
Lower body, rest of the thorax
Define lymph?
leadked fluid from capillaries that is not reabsorbed
Define lymphatic vessels?
one way, valve vessel that transport lymph through nodes en route to collecting ducts
Define lymph nodes?
Glads that filter lymph, support immune health
Define lymphatic ducts
all lymph vessels drain into, fluid goes to the subclavian veins and returns to system
If you remove lymph nodes in upper extreimeity what cancer could it cause?
breast
If you remove lymph nodes or have problems with them in the lower extremity, what cancers could they cause?
vulvar, ovarian, endometrial, cervical, colorectal
