nephron
The functional unit of the kidney that filters blood and makes urine.
Nephron Structure
Glomerulus:
Bowman's Capsule:
Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT): T
Loop of Henle:
Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT):
Collecting Duct:

Glomerulus function
It works like a filter, letting small molecules, water, and waste pass into Bowman's capsule, while bigger things like proteins and blood cells stay in the blood.
Bowman's Capsule
A cup-shaped structure that filters blood and collects water, waste, and small molecules.
Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT)
Reabsorbs useful substances like glucose, amino acids, salts, and water back into the blood.
Loop of Henle
Reabsorbs water and salts to help control water balance in the body.
descending limb of the Loop of Henle
Reabsorbs water from the filtrate.
ascending limb of the Loop of Henle
Reabsorbs salts but not water.
What is the distal convoluted tubule (DCT)
Adjusts salt, water, and pH levels in the filtrate.
Collecting Duct
Collects urine and reabsorbs water before urine leaves the kidney.
capillaries in the nephron
Small blood vessels that help with reabsorption and secretion.
kidney location and how is it protected
near the spine in at the middle of the back
protected by lower ribs and covered by layers of fat.
excretory system
helps to remove waste products such as nitrogenous wastes, salts and minerals from the body.
