what is filtration used for

separate an insoluble solid form a liquid

2
New cards

how is filtration set up

get your solution

put filter paper cone ontop of a beaker

put solution in

wait, the insoluble solid will spectate from the solution.

3
New cards

after filtration, what is the solid called

solid residue

4
New cards

define crystallisation

separates a soluble solide form a solution

5
New cards

how would you do crystallisation

pour solution onto an evaporating dish and heat the solution using a bunsen burner

The water in solution will start to evaporate, making the solution more concentrated.

When you see crystals start to form, that means some water is starting to evaporuate.

When you see this, remove the dish from the heat and let it cool.

The salt should start to form crystals as it becomes insoluble in the cold, highly concentrated solution.

Filter the crystals.

how would you use filtration and crystallisation to separate rock salt

get rock salt and grind it using a pestle and mortar

in water is that the rock salt can dissolve in it.

Filter it

Then crystallise it.
