Genres
Indicating certain types of movies (sci-fi, action, comedy, horror, etc.) A genre is an informal term, with lose definitions, but is also one that audiences, filmmakers, and industry agree upon. However, genres are flexible and changing definitions that are never set in stone
Sub-genres
Distinct and fairly long-lasting types within a genre. They help to better pin down a particular movie as genres can be large and varying
Conventions
Defined before as objects, shots, and techniques that are shared from film to film. Conventions are also a way for films to talk to each other through the audience and each genre and sub-genre will have particular conventions associated with it that help to define the genre
Genre/conventional iconography
recurring symbolic images namely in the form of shots that are shared from film to film. Of these objects and settings are most prominent, but actors can also become iconographic for particular genres
Cycles
The popularity of a genre or sub-genre that fluctuates over time. Consequently, genres do not die, but rather fade away in unpopularity until they are revitalized perhaps with a new spin
Reflectionist
Assuming that genres reflect social attitudes. criticized for being too oversimplistic a deeper analysis will likely reveal complexities that push back against a reflectionist view--everything is always more nuanced
