Dense regular connective tissue
Primarily parallel collagen fibers with a few elastin fibers and fibroblasts; attaches muscles to bones or bones to bones; located in tendons, most ligaments, and aponeuroses.
Compact bone (osseous tissue)
Hard, calcified matrix containing collagen fibers where osteocytes lie in lacunae; functions to support, protect, and provide levers for muscles.
Hematopoiesis
The process of blood cell formation that occurs inside the marrow of bones.
Adipose tissue
A loose connective tissue with closely packed adipocytes (fat cells) containing large fat droplets; provides reserve food fuel, insulates, and protects organs.
Neurons
Branching nervous tissue cells that transmit electrical signals from sensory receptors to effectors like muscles and glands.
Smooth muscle
Spindle-shaped cells with central nuclei and no striations arranged in sheets; provides involuntary control to propel substances along internal passageways.
Skeletal muscle
Long, cylindrical, multinucleate cells with obvious striations; provides voluntary control for movement and facial expression.
Cardiac muscle
Branching, striated, generally uninucleate cells with specialized junctions called intercalated discs; provides involuntary control to propel blood into circulation.
