Extreme Close Up
A type of shot that focuses on a small detail or part of a subject, often used for dramatic effect.
Pan
A camera movement where the camera rotates horizontally, capturing a wide view of the scene.
180 Degree Rule
A guideline in filmmaking that suggests maintaining consistent spatial relationships between characters and objects by not crossing an imaginary line.
Direct Address
A technique in which a character breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to the audience.
Experimental Films
Films that deviate from traditional narrative structures and explore unconventional storytelling techniques.
Formalism
A filmmaking approach that emphasizes artistic expression and visual style over traditional storytelling elements.
Observational Documentary
A documentary style that aims to capture real-life events and subjects without interference or intervention from the filmmaker.
Day and Date Releasing
The simultaneous release of a film in theaters and on streaming platforms on the same day.
Antagonist
The character or force that opposes the protagonist in a story.
Key Light
The main light source used in a scene to illuminate the subject.
Story vs
Story refers to the overall narrative or events that take place, while plot specifically refers to the sequence of events presented in the film.
Auteur Theory
The theory that the director is the primary creative force behind a film and can be considered the "author" of the work.
Box Office
The revenue generated by a film through ticket sales at theaters.
Director of Photography
The member of the film crew responsible for selecting cameras, lighting, and lenses, and overseeing the visual aspects of the film.
Deep Focus
A cinematography technique where multiple planes in a shot are all in focus simultaneously, creating a sense of depth.
Dutch Tilt/Canted Angle
A framing technique where the camera is tilted to create a visually unbalanced or disorienting effect.
Dissolve
An optical effect where one shot fades out while another shot fades in, creating a smooth transition between the two.
Eyeline Match
A cut that follows a shot of a character looking offscreen with a shot of a subject whose screen position matches the character's gaze.
Documentary
A nonfiction film that presents real objects, people, and events.
Steadicam
A camera stabilization system that allows for smooth and steady shots without the need for a dolly or other equipment.
Producer
The person or group responsible for overseeing the financial and logistical aspects of a film project.
Mise en scene
All the elements within a film scene that are organized and visible onscreen, including actors, lighting, sets, costumes, and more.
Diegesis
The world of a film's story, including its characters, places, and events.
Aspect Ratio
The width-to-height ratio of the film frame as it appears on a screen or monitor.
Foley Artist
A member of the sound crew who creates live sound effects while watching the film.
Storyboard
A visual representation of how a film or sequence will unfold, shot by shot.
Frame Narration
A narrative technique where a story is framed within another story, often through the use of flashbacks or multiple perspectives.
Barton Fink
