Structural Member Behaviour
The characteristic response of structural members under loads, including different types like trusses and beams.
Types of Joints
Connections between structural members that can either transfer moment (fixed connection) or not transfer moment (pin connection).
Load Path
The route through which loads transfer from points of application to the support or foundation.
Stability
The ability of a structure to maintain equilibrium under all possible loading scenarios, which can be external or internal.
Moment
A measure of the tendency of a force to cause rotation about a point.
Shear Diagram
A graphical representation of how shear force varies along the length of a structural element.
Deflection
The displacement of a structural member under load, which is a crucial consideration in structural design.
Structural Stiffness
The resistance of a structural element to deformation under applied loads.
Truss
A structural framework made up of members that are arranged in triangular units.
Beam
A structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to its axis.
Fixed Connection
A joint that provides resistance to rotation and can transfer moments between members.
Pin Connection
A joint that allows rotation and does not transfer moments between members.
Equilibrium Equations
Mathematical expressions that describe the conditions for a structure to be stable, typically represented as the sum of forces and moments equal to zero.
