How many stages of sleep are there?
There are 4 stages of sleep
Stage 1 Sleep Characteristics
Light stage of sleep (last 5-10 minutes); Characterized by theta waves; May experience hypnagogic imagery or myoclonic jerks
Stage 2 Sleep Characteristics
Characterized by sleep spindles and K complexes; Slowed heart rate; Lower body temperature; Muscle relaxation; Decreased eye movements; comprises up to 65% of sleep

Stage 3 and 4 Characteristics
Begins after 10-30 minutes; Marks beginning of slow-wave or deep sleep; Children spend 40% of sleep in deep sleep; Adults spend 25%

In stage 3, delta waves occur 20-50% of the time; In stage 4, delta waves occur more than 50% of the time
Stage 5 (REM) Sleep Characteristics
High-frequency, low-amp waves; Increased heart rate + blood pressure; Irregular breathing; 20-25% of sleep
