Why is Jerusalem important?
Jerusalem is a holy city for Muslims, Christians and Jews.

It was captured by the soldiers of Islam.

Christian pilgrims could visit freely for 400 years.

Saracens conquered the eastern Mediterranean.
What did the Saracens do after 1071?
They stopped Christian pilgrims going to Jerusalem.
What did the Pope do in 1095?
He called Christians to fight and recapture Jerusalem.
Why were they called Crusades?
Because knights wore a cross (crux means cross in Latin).
How long did the Crusades last?
About 200 years.

France, Germany and England.
Why did knights join?
For God, money, land or adventure.
What happened in the First Crusade?
They captured Jerusalem.
What did they do after?
They formed the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
What problem happened?
They fought over who should rule.
What were the rulers like?
Greedy and cruel.
Who was Saladin?
A Muslim leader from 1170.
What was Saladin like?
Gentle, kind and a great general.
What happened to Acre?
Captured by Crusaders, later recaptured about 100 years later.
