Monomer
Small units from which larger molecules are made.
Polymer
Molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together.
Condensation reaction
A reaction that joins two molecules together with a chemical bond by the removal of a water molecule.
Hydrolysis
A reaction which separates molecules by breaking a chemical bond due to the addition of a water molecule.
Monosaccharide
The monomers from which larger carbohydrates are made. eg glucose, fructose, galactose.
Disaccharides
Formed by the condensation of two monosaccharides held together by a glycosidic bond. eg maltose, sucrose, lactose.
Polysaccharide
Formed by the condenstion of many glucose units held together by glycosidic bonds. eg startch, cellulose, glycogen.
