Why is cultural “competency” a continuum
it is a continuous process, someone can always learn more and grow. You will never be fully competent
Social vs. Medical Model
The medical model views disability as an impairment or condition that should b secured or “fixed” to fit into society
The social model views disability is caused by environmental, attitudinal, and structural barriers that prevent people with impairments from fully participating
Cultural Humility
a lifelong process of self-reflection, examination of beliefs and identities, a “stepping back”
Cultural Responsiveness
impact of cultural humility across contexts
Recognizes the client as the expert in their own life and engages with them to help create solutions that are effective and impactful

Surface Culture
Observable patters, low emotional impact on trust (ex. art, music, holidays, clothes, hair, cooking, talking styles)
Shallow Culture

Deep Culture
Collective unconscious belief’s and norms ( concepts of self, decision making, cosmology, spirituality and concept of higher power)
Types of Implicit Bias
confirmation bias: The tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs or theories.
contrast effect bias: The tendency to judge two things together rather than separately when they are presented closely in time
affinity bias: Gravitate toward people who are like us. Possibly reject or hold at a distance those who are different from us.

Microagression

Disability
A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions)
