Physical health
The well-being of the body, maintained through exercise, a healthy diet, and enough rest.
Sexual health
Physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being related to sexuality, involving self-esteem, relationships, values, morals, and responsible choices.
Abstinence
Choosing not to have sex, which prevents pregnancy, STIs, and HIV and allows focus on school and future goals.
Contraception
Methods used to prevent pregnancy, including condoms, the contraceptive pill, and injections.
STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)
Infections spread through sexual contact, with symptoms such as discharge, sores or blisters, itching, and burning when urinating.
HIV
A virus that attacks the immune system.
AIDS
The advanced stage of HIV where the immune system becomes severely weakened.
RELAX method
A decision-making process involving: Recognise the problem, Educate yourself, Listen to advice, Act according to priorities, and Expect the unexpected.
Assirtiveness Skills
Skills to be confident, be aware of consequences, communicate clearly, and stick to your decisions.
Constitution
The highest law in South Africa, which protects rights and promotes equality, democracy, and freedom.
Bill of Rights
Chapter 2 of the Constitution which protects fundamental rights such as equality, human dignity, freedom, education, and religion.
Universal adult suffrage
A constitutional value where all citizens 18 years and up can vote.
Supremacy of the constitution
A value stating that the Constitution is the highest law.
Non-racialism
The principle of no descrimination based on race.
Non-sexism
The principle of no descrimination based on gender.
Tolerance
Respecting people who are different to you, including respect, acceptance, understanding, and open-mindedness.
Ubuntu
A practice of being a good citizen and showing humanity toward others.
Employee rights
Entitlements including fair pay, respect and dignity, a safe workplace, leave (sick, annual, parental), and protection from descrimination.
Skills crisis
A shortage of skilled workers in SA.
Skills Development Act (1998)
Legislation intended to improve skills development, help train workers, and reduce skills shortages.
Human rights day
Commemorated on 21 March 1960 for human rights.
Freedom day
Commemorated on 27 April 1994 for the first democratic election.
Worker's day
Observed on 1 May 1994 for workers' rights.
Youth day
Observed on 16 June 1976 for the Soweto uprising.
Mandela day
Observed on 18 June 2009 for Mandela's birthday.
Women's day
Observed on 4 Aug 1956 for the women's march in Pretoria.
Heritage day
Observed on 24 Sep to celebrate SA's diversity.
Reconciliation day
Observed on 16 December 1995.
