Helminth
A parasitic worm studied in medical helminthology.
Nematoda
A phylum of roundworms characterized by elongated, cylindrical bodies.
Monoecious
Organisms that have both male and female reproductive organs in the same individual.
Dioecious
Organisms that have male and female reproductive organs in separate individuals.
Pathogenesis
The process by which a disease develops in an organism.
Cuticle
The outer protective layer that covers the body of helminths.
Morphological characteristics
The study of the structure and form of organisms, used to differentiate helminth species.
Pseudocoelom
A fluid-filled body cavity of nematodes located between the body wall and gut.
Egg embryonation
The process by which fertilized eggs develop into larvae under suitable environmental conditions.
Microfilariae
The first stage larvae of filarial worms found in the blood.
Parthenogenesis
A form of asexual reproduction where eggs develop into offspring without fertilization.
Löffler’s syndrome
A respiratory condition caused by the migration of Ascaris larvae, characterized by cough and eosinophilia.
Ascaris lumbricoides
The largest intestinal roundworm in humans, causing ascariasis.
Filariform larvae
The third stage larvae of certain nematodes, which are infective to humans.
Dracunculus medinensis
Also known as the Guinea worm; causes dracunculiasis through waterborne transmission.
Trichuris trichiura
Commonly known as whipworm, causing trichuriasis in humans.
Enterobius vermicularis
Commonly known as pinworm; causes enterobiasis in humans.
Hookworms
Intestinal parasites (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) causing anemia by feeding on blood.
Entozoic diseases
Diseases caused by helminthic infections in humans.
Mebendazole
An antiparasitic drug used to treat helminth infections.
Zoonotic infection
Infection transmitted from animals to humans, such as trichinosis.
