What is Competition
Interaction between species (or organisms) in which
both species (or organisms) are harmed
Exploitation Competition
populations (or organisms) depress each other through use of a shared resource
Interference Competition
one population (or organism) directly prevents other populations (or organisms) from using the resource
• Allelopathy: plant releases biotoxins into the soil that prevent
competitors from growing
Pre-emptive Competition
one population (or organism) occupies space that then is no longer available to other populations (or
organisms) (think plants or barnacles, sessile organisms)
