What is the structure of puritan churches

  • Old Ship meeting House, Hingham MA, 1681/1731/1755 - church they built, a lot of the non Puritans in the company converted

  • Protestant churches work bottom up (as opposed to Catholicism which is more top down Pope→cardinals→bishops, etc), the congregation hires the preacher

  • The structure of the inside of the church reflects that organization

  • St. Lukes Church, Isle of Wight Virginia, 1685

  • Like a small Catholic Basilica - churches in Virginia were built differently than in MA because they weren’t Puritans (they were from the Church of England)

  • Remember the English colonization wasn’t religious in its purpose
