Temperature
measure of motion of particles (kinetic energy through celsius or kelvin)
Heat
describes the amount of energy being transferred (measured in joules or calories)
endothermic reaction
energy is absorbed as the reaction proceeds
exothermic reaction
energy is released as the reaction proceeds
enthalpy
signified by “H”, the amount of heat released or absorbed during a chemical reaction
endothermic graph
reactants start low, go up high then come back down in the middle near the red energy line
exothermic graph
reactants start in the middle, go up, then go all the way down (products)
Endothermic equation
energy + reactants = products
exothermic reactions
products + energy = reactants
specific heat
amount of heat required to raise the temperature, low SH absorbs heat quicker (good conductors), high SH absorbs heat slower (good insulators)
Specific heat equation
q (heat) / Mass x temperature change
