sublimation
When heating (melting, evaporating, sublimation):
Particles gain kinetic energy
Move faster
Overcome forces of attraction
Move further apart
When cooling (freezing, condensing):
Particles lose kinetic energy
Move more slowly
Forces of attraction pull particles closer
Become fixed (solid)
When a substance is melting or boiling, the temperature stays constant even though heat is still being supplied.
Why?
All the energy goes into breaking forces of attraction, not raising temperature.
Flat sections
state change
Sloped sections
temperature increasing or decreasing
why is it flat
Flat because energy is used to break or form forces of attraction
