Microbiome
The community of microorganisms that inhabit various body sites, including the skin and eyes.
Streptococcus pyogenes
A bacteria commonly associated with streptococcal infections, including strep throat.
Diphtheria toxin
A toxin produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae that inhibits protein synthesis in host cells.
Bronchioles
Small branches of the bronchi that lead to the alveoli in the lungs.
Pneumonia
An infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid.
Histoplasmosis
A fungal disease caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, typically impacting the lungs.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
Antibiotic resistance
The ability of bacteria to withstand the effects of drugs that once killed them.
Pertussis toxin
An exotoxin produced by Bordetella pertussis that enhances inflammatory responses.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
A bacterium that causes walking pneumonia and lacks a cell wall.
Tuberculosis (TB)
A serious infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs.
Aspergillosis
A fungal infection caused by the Aspergillus species, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals.
Koplik's spots
White lesions in the mouth that are indicative of measles infection.
Acute otitis media
An infection of the middle ear, often characterized by pus accumulation and ear pain.
Vaccine
A biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease.
Exotoxins
Toxins secreted by bacteria that can cause damage to the host's tissue and immune responses.
