Distress (Mayday Mayday Mayday) = risk of losing your vessel or lives on a mass scale
Emergency (Pan-Pan Pan-Pan Pan-Pan) = something bad is happening
When to report a marine occurrence
Within 24 hours for verbal communication, 48 hours for written.
How does the ship manager (britt) report marine occurrences?
Submit the new form to the health and safety officer at one of Transport Canada’s Regional Offices within 30 days after the date of the hazardous occurrence.
Send a copy to the workplace committee or health and safety representative.
Send a copy to the Regional Office of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada
Complete a "Report of a Marine Occurrence / Hazardous Occurrence Report" (Form 1808), as required by the TSB.
We are required to report on the following Marine Occurrences:
Fuel Spill
Loss of life
Fire onboard
Taking on Water
Running Aground
Evacuation
Person Overboard
Collision
Rescuing a smaller vessel
Medical Emergency
Disruptive Person(s) and/or Groups
Capsizing of a smaller vessel
Swamping of a smaller vessel
