Lymphatic System
A network that helps recycle fluids lost from the cardiovascular system and transports pathogens to lymph nodes.
Lymph Nodes
Tiny, oval-shaped structures that produce lymphocytes and filter out harmful substances.
Thymus Gland
An organ that produces T-lymphocytes and is considered an endocrine gland.
Tonsils
Masses of lymphatic tissue that produce lymphocytes and filter bacteria.
Spleen
An organ that filters pathogens from the blood, stores red blood cells, and produces lymphocytes and monocytes.
INTERSTITIAL FLUID
Fluid found in the spaces between cells, also known as tissue fluid.
LYMPH
Straw-colored fluid similar to plasma, consisting of water, lymphocytes, and nutrients, but no red blood cells.
Passive Acquired Immunity
Immunity obtained by injecting antibodies, providing immediate but short-lived protection.
Natural Acquired Immunity
Immunity resulting from recovering from a disease, leading to the production of antibodies.
Hypersensitivity
An abnormal immune response where the body reacts negatively to foreign substances.
Anaphylaxis
A severe systemic hypersensitivity reaction marked by rapid onset of symptoms and potential fatality.
Infectious Mononucleosis
A viral infection causing fever and enlarged lymph nodes, commonly spread through kissing.
AIDS
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome caused by HIV, leading to a compromised immune system.
Standard Precautions
Guidelines to prevent infection, particularly in healthcare settings, including handwashing and use of protective gear.
